WASTE: A Rubbish Documentary

2 billion tonnes of solid waste is generated each year. Where on earth does it all go?

It's a crisis that’s engulfing the world, shortening lives, suppressing economies and accelerating climate change, a crisis that’s hidden from view in the west, a visible part of everyday life elsewhere. But amongst the dumpsites, the debris and the grime, there’s a small army of people making positive changes. And they need to because there’s not a moment to waste. WASTE: A Rubbish Documentary will tell this story.

A THREE-PART DOCUMENTARY SERIES

WASTE: A Rubbish Documentary will tell the story of a rapidly growing global crisis engulfing the world yet remains largely hidden from view. It examines how, in just fifty years, we've created more waste than the whole of civilisation did before. Visiting some of the most shocking sites in the world, it tells the stories of families living on dumpsites - literally - whose lives remain in daily jeopardy and how waste generated in one part of the world affects the lives of those elsewhere. But it also examines the hope; rapidly emerging measures, technology and specialists that are starting to turn the tide.

The story is guided by the life's work of Professor David C Wilson MBE, one of the word's leading authorities on solid waste management. For over 40 years, David has been at the forefront of the sector across the globe. As he approaches retirement, his magnum opus provides the basis upon which we will dive into to the subject and tell previously untold stories of how the waste crisis has unfolded.

Produced and Directed by Stephen W Bates, himself a world renowned expert on behaviour change communications for the waste sector, the editorial team comprises a group of experts with a hugely expansive experience of working on the front line of waste in the most challenging regions: Andrew Whiteman, Adam Read, Brian McCarthy, Mike Webster and Joyce Klu.

Filming commences August 2023 with a target release scheduled of late 2024.
